7 Reasons Caregiving Is More than Just a Job

By Ruby Cemental

As our country's aging population has grown, so has the demand for compassionate and hardworking caregivers. Answering the call of this need, many caregivers have found immense satisfaction from choosing to work in a helping profession. Here are 5 reasons why caregiving is more than just a job.

1. Skills That Carry Beyond the Workplace

Caregivers learn many skills that transfer to their home and family relationships. They learn patience, compassion, communication, and other skills that help them be successful parents, spouses, and friends.

2. Appreciation

Hearing thank you, receiving a card, a gift, or other forms of recognition can really make a caregiver's day. Even more valuable, though, is the look of gratitude in the eyes of the person they are caring for, seeing them make progress and live joyful lives, and seeing the relief of family and friends when they know their loved one is well cared for.

3. Providing a Service of Value

While all jobs are important, caregivers' jobs are more than just desk jobs. They can see the impact they are making on a daily basis beyond simply furthering the interests of a company.  Becoming a caregiver is an emotionally satisfying experience and can provide a profound sense of purpose in life.

4. Pay is More Than Just an Income

A caregiver receives more than just a salary for their job. Caregivers receive the benefits of satisfaction knowing that their time and energy are helping others lead happier, more fulfilled lives. Often caregivers receive as much in return from those they care for as they give in the form of lasting relationships, gratitude, and lessons learned.

Additionally, caregivers gain valuable experience. Working as a caregiver is an excellent way to expand your medical knowledge while doing something you love.

5. Influence for Good

The influence a caregiver has cannot be measured. The impact those they care for, their families, and colleagues in ways they may not even realize. Their impact can carry on for generations to come.

Knowing that the job you do is important and taking pride in your work is an integral part of being a caregiver. The sense of integrity you derive from your work carries over into everything that you do in life.

A caregiver's role is at times demanding and difficult, but the rewards are well worth the effort put in. Effective and compassionate caregivers change the lives of those they care for, as well as their own lives, for the better.

6. Flexibility

Caregiving follows standard procedures which are used and recognized nationally throughout the healthcare community. This makes available to the caregiver a plethora of potential jobs. Many jobs are available in the same area or in just about any area in the country. Therefore, no matter what the family dynamics are or change to, the caregiver feels assured that if a family move is required, that there will be a position available.

7. Challenging

Caregiving challenges the individual to always improve through learning or performing on a daily basis. Every day is different. Every patient is different. Yet the skills used are often the same, though their application may vary.
