Have You Heard?
According to the National Institute of Health, noise is responsible for one-third of adult hearing loss. Deterioration of one's hearing is generally painless and takes place over a 25 to 30 year period beginning around the age of 50. With only one out of five people seeking help for hearing impaired issues people usually suffer a reduced quality of life. Missing important conversations, misunderstandings, confusion, heightened stress and depression are a few of the symptoms that can be associated with hearing loss. While hearing loss is irreversible, there are some steps you can take to protect your hearing and prevent future damage while enjoying life. Begin with seeing your audiologist; make an appointment and have your hearing tested and then take steps to become aware of noises in your life that can cause harm to your hearing.
With the holidays approaching and the family gatherings that are being planned with grandpa and grandma I thought it would be useful to post a few tips on communicating with those who have hearing loss to ensure everyone has an enjoyable holiday gathering with great conversation!
• Pay attention to the environment. Turn off any loud noise such as the T.V. or radio.
• Sit so you are facing the individual. This lets them read your lips as you speak.
• Speak slowly. Be clear with your words and don't rush.
• Do not eat, drink, or have any other distractions while speaking.
• Make sure the other person is paying attention to you before you start speaking.
Remember to always remain sensitive to the individual who has hearing loss and make sure that they have seen an audiologist and are taking appropriate steps to get any help they may need. We live in a noise-filled world -phone calls, iPod's, concerts, television, etc. So take care of your hearing regardless of your age and have a wonderful, conversation-filled upcoming holiday season.
